As a screw screen manufacturer and a worldwide supplier, Vortex Engineering offers standard dimensions, perforation sizes and stainless steel grades to choose from.
Screw screens are mostly used in places where the daily processed water flow rate is low to medium and the size of the solid waste particles inside the wastewater is relatively small.
They combine screening, conveying and optional compaction in a single compact unit. Wastewater passes through the perforated screen basket where the solid waste is captured. The screenings are then transported by the screw to the discharge point.
There are three types of screw screens commonly being used. First one is the channel type screw screen, the second one is the screw screen in tank and the third one is the vertical screw screen.
Perforated plate screen baskets provide a high capture rate for fine particles, while larger perforation sizes minimize the risk of clogging and increase hydraulic capacity.
As screw screens are compact and portable systems, the installation process is easy and requires very little infrastructure.
Screw Screen
The channel type screw screen is designed for direct installation into a concrete channel.
Wastewater flows through the perforated screen basket while the captured solids are retained on the screen surface. The screw rotates inside the screen basket and transports the screenings upwards.
During transportation, the screenings can optionally be washed, compacted and dewatered before being discharged into a container or conveyor.
Screw Screen in Tank
Screw screen in tank utilizes the same screening and conveying principle, but the complete unit is installed inside a stainless steel tank with inlet and outlet connections.
Wastewater enters the tank through the inlet connection and passes through the perforated screen section. The captured solids are transported and optionally compacted by the screw, while the screened water leaves the unit through the outlet connection.
As no concrete channel is required, screw screen in tank systems are ideal for small wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and industrial facilities where a self-supporting pretreatment unit is preferred.
Vertical Screw Screen
Vertical screw screens are used where the available installation space is limited or where the wastewater arrives from a deep channel, pipe or pumping station.
The unit is installed vertically and combines screening, conveying, washing and optional compaction in a single machine. Wastewater enters the perforated screen basket through the inlet opening. The liquid passes through the basket while the retained solids are captured on the screen surface.
A rotating screw with integrated brushes continuously cleans the screen basket and transports the screenings directly upwards. During transport, the screenings can optionally be washed, dewatered and compacted before discharge into a container.
As the screenings are transported vertically, the required installation length is minimized. Vertical screw screens are therefore ideal for pump stations, deep channels, manholes and retrofit projects where there is not enough space for an inclined screw screen.
