Bridge Scrapers in Wastewater Treatment: A Reliable Solution for Sludge, Scum and Grit Removal

At Vortex Engineering, we design and manufacture advanced wastewater treatment equipment. Among our core technologies, the Bridge Scraper stands out as a highly effective system for removing sludge and scum in clarifiers and flotation tanks.

In this article, we’ll explore what bridge scrapers do, how they operate, and why they are essential in today’s wastewater treatment plants.

What Is a Bridge Scraper?

A bridge scraper is a mechanical system that serves two main purposes:

  • It removes settled sludge from the bottom of the tank

  • It also skims floating scum from the water surface

Depending on the tank design, the bridge may remain fixed or move across the tank, either by rotating or travelling.

These systems are widely used in the following treatment processes:

  • Primary clarifiers, where they remove heavy solids

  • Secondary clarifiers, which separate biological sludge

  • DAF units, that skim off oils and light suspended solids

  • Grit and grease removal tanks, as part of the pretreatment phase

Ultimately, bridge scrapers reduce solids at an early stage, thus easing the burden on downstream processes and improving effluent quality.

How Does a Bridge Scraper Work?

Bridge scraper operation depends on the tank geometry. Two main types are commonly used:

1. Circular Tank Bridge Scrapers

  • Fixed Bridge Scrapers
In this setup, a stationary bridge supports the scraper arms. A central drive rotates the arms along the tank floor, guiding sludge into a central hopper. Meanwhile, a separate skimmer continuously removes floating scum from the surface.

  • Rotating Bridge Scrapers
In contrast, this version features a bridge that slowly rotates, driven by a central or peripheral motor. As it moves, both bottom scrapers and surface skimmers work simultaneously to maintain continuous removal.

2. Rectangular Tank Bridge Scrapers

  • Travelling Bridge Scrapers
Here, the bridge moves linearly along rails mounted on each side of the tank. Scraper blades push sludge toward a sludge pit, while surface skimmers channel scum into a collection trough.

Moreover, we can integrate advanced control systems such as:

  • Programmable timers

  • Level sensors

  • SCADA connectivity

Consequently, operators can monitor performance remotely and automate operation with minimal manual input.

Applications of Bridge Scrapers

Bridge scrapers are extremely versatile, making them suitable for various wastewater treatment stages:

  • Primary Clarifiers – To remove settleable solids from raw influent

  • Secondary Clarifiers – For capturing biological solids post-treatment

  • DAF Units (Dissolved Air Flotation) – For eliminating fats, oils, and suspended solids

  • Grit and Grease Removal Tanks – To support preliminary treatment operations

By integrating bridge scrapers into your facility, you enhance both operational efficiency and environmental compliance.
